The braking system of a vehicle is perhaps the single most important safety mechanism. Without brakes, the vehicle’s forward momentum is slowed down and the vehicle does not come to halt in event of a miss-happening. The braking system ensures motorists safety on the road. The braking system of a vehicle is made up of a number of components that translate the driver’s actions into physical force that stops the car. One of those components is the brake pads. 

What are Brake Pads? Brake pads are the component of the braking system that contacts and applies pressure and friction to a vehicle’s brake rotors. Found in the disc brake systems, brake pads are flat, shiny of steel with a thick friction material layer on one side. The friction material type varies from vehicle type and size and brake caliper type.

How do Brake Pads Work? When the brake pedal is pushed, the brake pads contact the rotors and cause friction to slow and stop the car. Brake pads are an interconnected system that relies on each of its components to function safely and successfully. When the brake pedal is pressed it activates the cylinder that sends brake fluid through hoses down to calipers. Then the calipers engage the brake pads that apply pressure to the rotor (connected with each wheel). This pressure creates the friction needed to slow or stop the vehicle. When the rotor slows, so does the wheels and the vehicle.

Brake pads are made of different materials and since they absorb heat and energy during braking, they take a lot of wear. This is why they need to be replaced from time to time.
